Celebrating the Humble Harvests of High Desert Homesteading

Ode to Spring!!

I was away from my garden for 5 days, inconsequential in say, January, but the first week in April….it feels like a whole other world all of the sudden.  I was welcomed by sweet daffodils greeting me by my front door. Cherry, Plum, Apricot and Peach blossoms, all just bursting toward the sunshine, smiling at me after a long sleep, I am glad they sleep in a little this year.  I walked out into the warm night and was able to sit in the garden for as long as I wanted, rather than until I was sent inside by the cold.  As I sat, I swear I could hear the garden growing.  The thick layer of fall leaves was crinkling and shifting, stirred by bugs and roots waking up, even under the moonless night sky.  Is it just me, or is this spring totally magical?  Maybe it is because I have more time to enjoy it and pay attention.  This is the first year I have allowed natural cycles, moon phases, and pure earthly voices guide my work.  Before it was my job, my “to do’s” in the human world that were dictating my time.  Though my “JOB” is gardening, I wasn’t letting the powerful forces of the natural world guide my hand, and let me tell you, it is an amazing feeling.  I understand it is a luxury, one I am deeply grateful for, but one more valuable to me than fancy shoes or a trip to the Bahamas.  I would rather live simply, in natural rhythms and time, than rush around only to not have time to pay attention to the forces that are really at work in the garden and in me.  The funny thing about these rhythms though, is that they are no necessarily more gentle than the busy bustle of the humans pace.  Though we have more day light now to light our working hands, there is so much more to do.  I feel the wave of summer sneaking up on me, ready to take me under, pull me into her tide and then softly bob me back to a calm surface, sometime around November!!  Well great tide, you work in mysterious ways, may I lean into you and enjoy the ride of your ever-moving flow!!  Happy Spring to all of you hope you are allowing yours deepest rhythms guide you.  OH…PS if any of you are thinking, what guides are you really talking about… my dreamy tone is probably due to the biodynamic class I am taking which started today.  For those of you who have been reading my blog, you know I have been following the biodynamic planting calendar this year which is based on letting your garden acts be determined by the zodiac signs in which the moon is moving.  Though I teach organic gardening and have been for what 10 years now, this class really opened me up to all the non-visible yet totally logical forces at work in our world.  I highly recommend it and there is still room. If anyone wants info on the class email the teacher, Carrie Jo, at creeseda@yahoo.com.  Here she is teaching us with colorful chalk and a great smile.
